Managing Database Administration Tasks
The database is an important component within the SAP system architecture. In addition to the files at the operating system level, the database
contains the ABAP programs, system settings, and data required to operate the SAP system.
Depending on the size of your enterprise and the way in which it’s organized, database administration is also one of the tasks of the SAP administrator. In this case, you require extensive knowledge of database systems, in general, and knowledge of the database system used for your
SAP system, in particular. In some cases, however, database system
administration is organizationally separate from SAP Basis maintenance.
Then, you only need to have general knowledge of database management, which will form part of this section.
The Microsoft SQL Server is the easiest non-SAP database system to manage. The SQL Server is nevertheless a complex “enterprise-grade” database system that, first, demands full attention and, second, demands that
the administrator acquire the requisite expertise to manage it. If the SQL
Server contains enterprise-critical data, administration can’t be of a
“casual” nature. The SQL Server is now suitable for large environments
with high performance requirements.
